After decades on the force, Burr Ridge Police Chief John Madden announced his retirement publicly Tuesday. His last day will be Aug. 24.
According to a village news release, he had announced his retirement privately to the village administration at the start of 2024.
Madden started policing 42 years ago and he spent the bulk of his career with the Burr Ridge Police Department, where he began as a patrol officer in 1989. Since then, he rose through the ranks and was named police chief in 2009. Under his leadership, the police force adopted new technologies like body cameras and street cameras, the latter of which the chief pointed to annually as a successful tool for catching out-of-town car thieves targeting the suburbs and suspects fleeing other jurisdictions in cars.
Madden was also a supporter of interagency cooperation and he established the DuPage Metropolitan Emergency and Investigation Team, a countywide task force leading investigations into serious crimes and critical incidents across that county.
“John Madden’s service as Chief has raised the bar for excellence in the Burr Ridge Police Department,” Mayor Gary Grasso said in the news release. “His contributions have been invaluable, and his leadership will be greatly missed. Our community is safer and stronger thanks to his unwavering commitment and dedication over the years.”
Madden said he enjoyed his time in Burr Ridge.
“It has been an honor and privilege to serve the residents of Burr Ridge for over three decades,” said Madden in a release. “I am immensely proud of the accomplishments we have achieved together, and I look forward to the department’s continued success.”
