Somerset County area school districts adopted their general budgets in June for the 2024-2025 school year.
Property tax rates in Pennsylvania are referred to as millage rates, and they are figured in mills. One mill is equal to 1/1,000 of a dollar. As used in relation to property tax, 1 mill is equal to $1 in property tax, which is levied per $1,000 of a property’s determined taxable value.
Here are the latest budgets and tax structures for the county’s school districts.
Berlin
Final operating budget for the 2024-25 school year with estimated revenues of $13,756,398.53 and resources of $2,052,166 and estimated expenditures of $15,341,785.
The real estate tax for the 2024-2025 school year is 34.33 mills, up from 32 mills in 2023-2024. Other taxes are: per capita, $10; occupation tax, $10; earned income tax, 0.5%; real estate transfer tax, 0.5%.
Conemaugh Township Area
The final general fund budget for the 2024-25 school year was approved with estimated revenues of $16,553,707 and estimated expenditures of $17,058,923 (any end-of-year shortfall will be covered by the general fund).
Real estate taxes for the 2024-25 school year are $30.05 mills, an increase of 2.09 mills from the previous rate of 27.96 mills in 2023-2024. Other taxes are as follows: per capita Act 679, $5; per capita Act 511, $5; earned income act 511, 1% (shared); real estate transfer tax, 1% (shared); local services tax, $5 and occupational tax, 25% of county valuation.
Meyersdale
Final 2024-25 general fund budget of $17,740,968.
Real estate taxes were increased to 27.1 mills from 25.26 mills in 2023-24 . Other taxes are: per capita, $10; earned income tax, 0.5%; real estate transfer tax, 0.5%.
North Star
The final general fund budget for the 2024-25 school year was approved at $23,241,761 with the real estate tax to remain unchanged at 37.40 mills. All other taxes remain the same as in prior years as well.
Rockwood
Final general fund budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year was approved at $14,515,346 with a beginning committed fund balance of $500,000, a beginning unassigned fund balance of $1,506,297, a beginning assigned fund balance of $2,650,000 and a budgetary reserve of $1,000,000.
The real estate tax rate was increased to 24.79 mills, up from 23.55 mills in 2023-24. The earned income and real estate transfer taxes are 0.5%.
Salisbury
The preliminary budget of $7,974,315 was approved for 2024-25 with a real estate tax rate of 23.11 mills, which is unchanged from 2023-2024. Other taxes are: earned income, 0.5%; real estate transfer tax, 0.5%; per capita tax Act 679, $5 and adult residence tax 511, $5.
Shade-Central City
The general fund budget for the 2024-25 school year was approved at $9,373,328.
The real estate tax rate is 40.54 mills, which is unchanged from the previous year. Other taxes are: per capita Act 679, 0.5%; per capita Act 511, 0.5%; earned income tax, 1% and occupational tax, $10.
Shanksville-Stonycreek
The general fund budget for the 2024-25 school year is $8,566,577.
The district’s real estate tax rate is 37.04 mills, which has remained unchanged since 2014. Other taxes are: per capita Act 679, $5; per capita Act 511, $5; earned income tax, 0.5% and real estate transfer tax, 0.5%.
Somerset
The final 2024-25 general fund budget is $46,836,510 and includes no tax increase.
The real estate tax levy of 45.06 mills remains unchanged for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
Somerset County Technology Center
The center’s approved general budget for the 2024-25 school year is $6,630,087, which is an increase over last year.
Turkeyfoot
Final budget for the 2024-25 school year is $5,888,518.
The property tax rate of 28.68 mills remains unchanged from the previous year.
Windber Area
The general fund budget for 2024-25 was tentatively approved at $24,292,994 with a real estate tax of 34.99 mills for properties in Somerset County. This is an increase from 32.28 mills in 2023-2024. Other taxes are: earned income tax Act 511, 1% (shared); real estate transfer tax, 1% (shared with county) and local services tax, $10 for Ogle Township and $5 for all other municipalities.
